Hey readers, welcome to another training session. Today we are going to talk about bouncing back after a bad performance, bad test, and mistake. At some point in your life, there will be a time where you mess up or fail to meet your own expectations. When those moments do come because they will, it's important to know how to bounce back from it. Bouncing back is a skill that many who are elite in their craft are able to do very well. To "bounce back" means to return quickly to normal condition after a difficult situation or event.
Here are some ways to bounce back:
Accept what happened and self reflect. Acceptance is important because you can't change what happened. Accepting what happened does not mean that you're satisfied or that you're burying what happened. It is simply recognizing what happened and knowing that it can't be changed. Self reflection is important because it allows you to look inward at yourself and see what you could've done differently or what you even did correctly. You can do the right things and still make mistakes. That's okay!
Cry and be frustrated if you have to be. It's okay to bummed out about a failed test, bad performance, or even injury. Allow yourself to feel all your feelings at the moment. Bottling up your emotions will do nothing but eat you alive and having you taking things out on others who don't deserve it. Do you your best to not stay bummed though because life goes on whether you like it or not.
Remind yourself who the eff you is! This is my favorite part of bouncing back, the self talk is critical in times like this. Just because you had a bad performance does not make you a bad athlete, student, employee, boss, or entrepreneur. I'm sure you've plenty of instances where you did well on something. Anytime you have a bad performance, remind yourself that you're still capable of great things simply because you've done great things in the past. Don't let on failed instance discredit the hundreds of great things you've done right. You still great regardless of what the results might show.
Go right back to the drawing board. Go back to the basics and hone your craft. Get right back to work because the work doesn't stop after a bad performance. The work also doesn't stop after a good performance either. Don't allow yourself to get too low after a bad performance because the work is gonna be calling soon after. That work allows you to prepare for a greater performance next time.
Continue to show up After a bad performance, people are often quick to go into hiding and bury their head in the sand. Don't be so quick to give up so easily because you never know what could transpire if you keep pressing forward. Every great performer was once a rookie that refused to give up. So keep showing up even when you're not the best in the classroom, meeting room, track, court, field, or even the stage. People can be inspired by your own story because you continued to show up. I bet there's people you admire now and thats a result of them continuing to show up day in and day out. I encourage you to do the same.
Well that's it for today's training session. Thank you for tuning in and I hope you can apply these to your own life. I can't to share of my own bounce back stories as well as hear some of your own bounce back stories. Until Next Time,
E. Ibadin
